Community Based Initiatives (CBI) is a division of BakerRipley that builds on the unique economic and social assets of individuals and their neighborhoods, moving them to self-sufficiency and an improved quality of life. Largely supported by private philanthropic investment, our community-based programs engage and connect individuals to the resources that meet their emerging needs and aspirations. We provide a continuum of services including free tax preparation, family health and education, immigration and citizenship services, financial assistance and programs for youth and seniors.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Fab Lab Program Assistant will be responsible for greeting all visitors upon entering the facility and informing them about Fab Lab activities. Answers phones, provides general administrative support as needed, and assist with providing information, fee collection, and data entry.   The Fab Lab Program Assistant will be highly motivated and outgoing with excellent interpersonal skills enabling them to provide exceptional learning experiences for all participants.  Additionally, the Fab Lab Program Assistant will assist in all aspects of the daily operation of Fab Lab Houston which includes, but is not limited to: workshop facilitation, program preparation, space organization, as well as management of supplies and inventory. 

 

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creating a welcoming, safe, and engaging environment
  • Assist all Fab Lab members and visitors with their projects and in safely using equipment
  • Lead Fab Lab volunteer orientations and trainings
  • Keep inventory of materials and consumables
  • Ensure all participants follow Fab Lab Houston rules and policies
  • Follow data entry, documentation, and reporting practices of Fab Lab activities
  • Giving tours to new and potential members, teachers, students, and community members
  • Deliver programming for participants on a range of subjects and skills
  • Help maintain a clean and organized shop
  • Support Fab Lab functions as needed

Job Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalency

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

1+ years of relevant experience

SKILLS:

  • Willing to work flexible schedule, to include evenings and weekends
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment; demonstrated flexibility, initiative, and collegiality
  • Fantastic customer service skills and a desire to work closely with students
  • Ability to quickly learn new software and hardware
  • Ability to effectively communicate complicated concepts
  • Enjoy the process of learning / sharing knowledge and skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment with a high volume of people interaction 
  • Ability to effectively communicate shop and member issues

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY:

Intermediate knowledge of common desktop applications (Internet Browsers, Microsoft Office, image editing, etc.)

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Bilingual English and Spanish
