Job Description

Community Based Initiatives is a division of BakerRipley that builds on the unique economic and social assets of individuals and their neighborhoods, moving them to self-sufficiency and an improved quality of life. Largely supported by private philanthropic investment, our community-based programs engage and connect individuals to the resources that meet their emerging needs and aspirations. We provide a continuum of services including free tax preparation, family health and education, immigration and citizenship services, financial assistance and programs for youth and seniors.

JOB SUMMARY:

The GOTV Canvassers support the agency's Voter Engagement and Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) efforts.  Under the supervision of our Community Engagement Team, the GOTV Canvassers will conduct door-to-door canvassing in our target neighborhoods with an emphasis on Pasadena, East Aldine, and the Greater Hobby Area.  They will also participate in (and in some cases lead) phone banking out of BakerRipley’s Community Centers.

Canvassers will provide voter education: where, when and how to vote, and inform community members about BakerRipley’s Community/Voter events, programming and services. This is a strictly non-partisan effort to reach out to underrepresented and historically-disenfranchised voters in the Houston area and to motivate them to vote.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific Program Support

  • Support Community Engagement strategies, including but not limited to Voter Registration & Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts.
  • Educate and engage voters through door-to-door canvassing and/or phone banking.
  • Build relationships with potential voters and infrequent voters.
  • Provide information about voter registration, polling locations, and general election information.
  • Complete daily and weekly reports on progress and meet all goals and metrics.
  • Effectively use technology and other tools to ensure accurate and timely data entry after completing each visit.
  • Participate and complete all required training.
  • Must be able to walk for long periods of time and walk up steps.

Other Program Support

  • Work with CBI Community Liaison to ensure all program events are on the CBI calendar and flyers are approved
  • Create, produce, and deliver a range of promotional, educational, and informational presentations, and/or resource materials related to program activities and initiatives
  • Assist or creates any outreach initiatives needed for programs

Administrative Support

  • Execute organizational and other administrative tasks as related to Voter Engagement and GOTV efforts

Reporting

  • Work with program staff to ensure program data is accurately captured
  • Provide weekly reports on Voter Engagement and GOTV efforts to Community Engagement Team, as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

1+ years preferred in community organizing.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

SKILLS:

  • Must have excellent people skills; must be comfortable speaking with strangers and people from different backgrounds.
  • Interest and/or experience with phone banks, door-to-door work, public speaking, outreach, or voter engagement work.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills on the phone and in person for both internal and external purposes.
  • Ability to work in communities of color, low-income communities, immigrant/refugee communities.
  • Extensive experience in recruiting and leading volunteers.
  • Comfortable and effective working directly with community members across various subject areas
  • Strong ability to multi-task across a variety of functions COMPUTER PROFICIENCY: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Email
