Job Description

BakerRipley provides an integrated holistic education system for families and their children ages six months through eighth grade. The Choices in Education division oversees the early childhood education programs and the BakerRipley Schools, including three community-based elementary schools, one middle school, and a “New Neighbor” school for refugee children – all of which reside within our community centers. Our holistic approach to educating the entire family allows us to create a stronger and more positive impact in the community. Both children and their parents gain access to education and broader community resources to prepare them for a successful degree and/or career. 

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Child Nutrition Manager is responsible for ensuring overall nutrition needs of the participating families are met. The primary duty of this position is to ensure optimum overall nutritional status of the children and families we serve by linking program participants to nutritional services via internal and external collaborative efforts.

 
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages agency USDA Food Programs.
  • Assists Sr. Family Wellness Coordinator with meeting all reporting responsibilities for Food Programs, Head Start and Charter requirements .
  • Plans and prepares menus that comply with USDA food program standards.
  • Works in collaboration with Family Wellness staff and FDWs in identifying children with special dietary considerations and ensures special diet menus are created to meet those identified needs.
  • Provides internal monitoring of locations to ensure compliance with USDA Food Program regulations and Head Start Performance Standards in content area.
  • Provides training to staff related to Head Start Performance Standards and USDA Food Program policies, procedures and processes to ensure clear understanding of contract compliance issues.
  • Reviews completed Nutrition Assessment and Special Diet Declaration forms and links families to nutritional resources throughout the community that will address the nutritional needs of the family..
  • Promotes awareness of nutrition-related issues to staff, children and parents through the distribution of materials, provision of training and nutrition activities and nutritional counseling. Encourages parent and community involvement in the nutrition program by involving them in the development, decisions and evaluation.
  • Assists Sr. Family Wellness Coordinator in the preparation for monitoring of USDA food programs by state and local authorities and the Head Start Monitoring Protocol federal authorities.
  • Develops the implementation of monitoring systems to ensure compliance with USDA Food Programs and other local, State and Federal regulations.
  • Reviews and consolidates monthly information to ensure the agency submits an accurate claim for reimbursement form all participating locations.
  • Maintains a leadership role in developing staff through various opportunities to become a cohesive unit that can be better utilized to accomplish content area and program goals and objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Nursing, Public Health, or Business required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
     

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:.

  • Minimum 3-5 years preferred
  • Experience in USDA Food Programs strongly preferred.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • City of Houston Food Manager’s Certificate or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Registered Dietician strongly preferred.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyzes, and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical skills including: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and calculation of percentages.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task


COMPUTER PROFICIENCY:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Applications including Excel, Power Point and Word


LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bilingual preferred but not required.
