Community Based Initiatives is a division of BakerRipley that builds on the unique economic and social assets of individuals and their neighborhoods, moving them to self-sufficiency and an improved quality of life. Largely supported by private philanthropic investment, our community-based programs engage and connect individuals to the resources that meet their emerging needs and aspirations. We provide a continuum of services including free tax preparation, family health and education, immigration and citizenship services, financial assistance and programs for youth and seniors.     

JOB SUMMARY:

The Emerging Leaders youth program serves school-aged youth through a variety of out-of-school time services and activities across the Greater Houston Area. The Youth Development Specialist I is responsible for implementing unique and high quality after-school and summer programming to youth ages 3-13. Promoting leadership, academic achievement, and social development while maintaining a safe and positive environment.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts timely and comprehensive implementation of all program components for assigned group of students providing effective, meaningful, and developmentally-appropriate activities
  • Carry out the goals, themes, and schedule of the program to provide a consistent and high quality experience
  • Recognizes and reports suspected physical and sexual abuse to the appropriate authorities as required by law
  • Completes all essential documentation in an accurate and timely manner
  • Monitor student files and attendance
  • Communicates regularly with peers and parents in small or large group settings
  • Responsible for driving agency vehicles to transport participants to and from schools, field trip locations and other sites.
  • Maintain safe and clean environment within agency vehicle
  • Provides appropriate supervision for assigned group of youth at all times creating a safe, clean, and risk-free environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or GED required

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

One year prior experience in a school-aged care program preferred

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Minimum age of 19 and meet the requirements of DFPS Child Care Licensing.

Currently possess or pursuing a degree in education, child development, social work OR a current Child Development Associate (CDA)

Valid Texas Driver’s License with appropriate insurance coverage, ability to drive throughout the city, and good driving record (e/g/ no more than once accident and/or moving violation in the past 12 months)

If under 19 years of age, employee must complete a Driving Safety course prior to hire

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY:

Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

English written & verbal

SKILLS:

  • Knowledge and understanding of BakerRipley’s goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Possess high level of organizational and communication skills with coworkers, parents, and students
  • Knowledge of classroom management and instructional concepts & theories of learning methods
  • Building safe, effective learning environments for children from a variety of cultural backgrounds
  • Creativity skills that provide the children with an engaging learning atmosphere
  • Willing to accept responsibility of the safety and well-being for the children in their care
  • Ability to relate-well and remain patient when supervising the children
  • Comfortable with transporting children in a 15 passenger van to/from school, field trips, and other BakerRipley locations
  • Knowledge and ability to provide recreational/athletic activities and games such as soccer, basketball, kickball, etc.
