Community Based Initiatives is a division of BakerRipley that builds on the unique economic and social assets of individuals and their neighborhoods, moving them to self-sufficiency and an improved quality of life. Largely supported by private philanthropic investment, our community-based programs engage and connect individuals to the resources that meet their emerging needs and aspirations. We provide a continuum of services including free tax preparation, family health and education, immigration and citizenship services, financial assistance and programs for youth and seniors.


Each year Neighborhood Tax Centers assists thousands of hard-working, low income family by preparing their tax returns for free at twelve Houston area locations.  If you are interested in helping others while working in a fast paced, stimulating environment, please consider joining our team.

The Tax Preparer prepares accurate individual tax returns, performs quality reviews, answers tax related questions from volunteers and clients, and assists the Tax Center Manager as directed.  


  • Attend the NTC tax preparation training in December
  • Pass the IRS Advanced certification test
  • Accurately prepare individual tax returns within VITA scope.  This includes current year, prior year, state, and amended returns.
  • Perform quality reviews of returns prepared by volunteers and other staff members
  • Assist volunteers with tax preparation as needed
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Tax Center Manager or Director

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience


  • 3 years of individual tax preparation experience


  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
  • Ability to work quickly with attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills
  • Extensive knowledge of individual tax law
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Experience in a customer oriented environment
  • Displays a supportive and professional disposition
  • Excellent logical, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and long hours from January through April


  • Proficient in Windows, Microsoft Office programs, including Excel and Word


  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred but not required
