JOB DESCRIPTION

BakerRipley Community Based Initiatives division seeks an Immigration Attorney who will be responsible for managing the organization’s provision of non-detained removal defense legal services. The Immigration Attorney will report to the Managing Immigration Attorney.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct and comprehensive immigration legal services to eligible clients seeking assistance with immigration removal proceedings in the Houston non-detained immigration court. Direct representation includes consultations and direct representation in immigration court.
  • Assist in the development of the organization’s strategy for removal defense services including collaboration with the program's detained removal defense project.
  • Conduct research on immigration-related legal and regulatory changes and analyze the implications of such changes on the organization’s provision of legal services.
  • Ensure that the legal services office operates in accordance with pertinent laws and regulations.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

    Law degree from an accredited law school

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 to 5 years in immigration law (preference of at least one year working in removal defense)

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • License to practice law in the United States

SKILLS:

  • Proactive and communicative working style
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Ability to manage a relatively large caseload of removal cases with the support of a legal assistant
  • Prior experience in the relevant client community or in a similar community preferred
  • Proven interest in working with low income and particularly vulnerable populations

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) proficiency required
