Job Description

Adult Education is a division of BakerRipley that builds on the unique economic and social assets of students, moving them to self-sufficiency and an improved quality of life. Largely supported by Adult Education and Literacy funding from the Texas Workforce Commission, our community-based classrooms engage and connect adult students to their education goals and personal aspirations. We provide a continuum of services including English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency, Digital Literacy, Employer-based Workplace Literacy, and Integrated Education & Training Certification classes. In addition, BakerRipley operates Pearson GED Testing Centers at three locations.     

JOB SUMMARY:

In partnership with Aldine ISD, the ideal candidate will provide contextualized ESL instruction for parents of elementary age students within a school environment, targeting ESL skills needed for parents to assist in their children’s education and integrating a broader awareness of the U.S. education system. The class will be a mix of English language instruction and family literacy activities aimed at increasing the amount of time parents’ engage in reading activities with their children. This is a pilot program between Aldine ISD and BakerRipley and will be a temporary position at time of hire.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support agency adult education initiatives, as well as school initiatives, in respective school environment. Manage students in the program and ensure students are achieving measureable skill gains.
  • Actively recruit parents and ensure classes maintain enrollment. 
  • Teach contextualized ESL and basic literacy to adults in a public school setting.
  • Assist with program evaluation and reporting.
  • Research and maintain knowledge and awareness of U.S. school system, local school structures, and the individual school’s resources for parents.
  • Actively participate in the Agency’s partnership with the Aldine ISD to explore ways of improving the quality of instruction.
  • Attend mandatory trainings/professional development.
  • Follow agency policy and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or related field preferred. Texas Teaching Certificate preferred

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of (1) year working in ESL/ABE/ASE Program

Minimum of (2) years working in Adult Education or public school setting

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

BEST Plus (Oral and Literacy) certifications assessment preferred

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY:

Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office and Outlook

SKILLS:

  • Complete required agency training at start of employment, as well as 15 hours of educational professional development within a year of hire.
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and successful experience working in teams.
  • Knowledgeable of U.S. public school system and trends
  • Knowledgeable of Adult Education data entry systems (TEAMS)
  • Able to work flexible hours including evening and weekends, depending on Adult Education class schedule
  • Knowledgeable in instructional design and technology proficiency

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Bilingual (English-Spanish) preferred
