Community Initiatives is a division of BakerRipley that builds on the unique economic and social assets of individuals and their neighborhoods, moving them to self-sufficiency and an improved quality of life. Largely supported by private philanthropic investment, our community-based programs engage and connect individuals to the resources that meet their emerging needs and aspirations. We provide a continuum of services including adult education, health and wellness, neighborhood disaster response, immigration and citizenship services, financial initiatives and programs for youth and seniors.    

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Community Development & Engagement leads the strategy and execution of programs related to the empowerment of neighbors and their respective communities, specifically in the organization’s target neighborhoods.  Using Appreciative Community Building – BakerRipley’s community engagement & development model – the director ensures programs and operations are responsive to the community and help individuals and families reach their full potential. Provides guidance to the team on how to keep a pulse on neighborhood aspirations, supports the establishment of relationships and working closely with community residents, leaders, partners and stakeholders. 

The Director of Community Development & Engagement will be responsible for overseeing the successful implementation of neighborhood-specific programs.  Leads the progress and growth of our Community Engineers Leadership Program and ensures curriculum is an innovative tool that supports neighbors in building on their strengths and assets.  Works with team to develop and maintain an effective non-partisan approach to civic engagement with a concentration on Get Out the Vote (GOtV) efforts and civic connections that encourage neighbors to establish collaborative partnerships with their government and community leaders.   Collaborates with agency directors to maximize the engagement of our neighbors in a holistic process that is inclusive of everyone and considers every strength, asset and vision as a valuable factor to keeping our region a place of opportunity for all. 

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Strategic Planning

  • Develops new strategic initiatives that could be built around existing (or benefit from new) partnerships.
  • Coordinates city-wide events with community partners to increase the reach and visibility of our programs.
  • Oversees leadership training programs that allow agency participants to play an active role in their neighborhoods and feel connected to the community.
  • Works with Program Planning and Evaluation Division on program design for engagement, specifically focused on continued growth and innovation of the Community Engineers and Civic Engagement/GOTV program and other
  • Identifies and participates in professional development opportunities that will enhance the quality of departmental programs and services.
  • Serves as an active and fully engaged participant in cross-agency project teams and committees as assigned. 

Partnership Building

  • Designs and implements comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances: local government, elected officials, school districts, civic organizations, and nonprofit agencies and works closely with the Senior Director and organizational leadership to establish and cultivate those alliances
  • Formalizes partnerships and documents roles and responsibilities, and policies and procedures via MOUs, training manuals, handbooks and toolkits

 Data Driven

  • Maintains a pulse on latest research, best practices, and issues in the areas of community development, leadership development and civic engagement; makes recommendations to ensure our programs and services remain relevant to and transformative for the neighborhoods we serve
  • Supports staff in implementing and revising program plans, quality improvement processes, Theories of Change, psychographics, geo-mapping, and other evaluation tools
  • Reviews regular monitoring reports from performance team and provides coaching and development to staff.

 Community Development

  • Responsible for increasing BakerRipley’s capacity to implement, grow, and replicate our neighborhood initiatives and establishing the agency as a leader in the area of community development and engagement
  • Directs the work of staff responsible for implementing a multitude of community development, leadership development and civic engagement programs, services and activities at the neighborhood level
  • Directs the execution of the agency’s GOTV program to maximize outreach through collaboration with internal divisions and external partners.
  • Oversees and provides guidance on the implementation of the Appreciative Community Building process to inform existing and future program design.
  • Directs the implementation of neighborhood plans, policies and procedures that achieve high-quality, effective service delivery and measurement of outputs, outcomes and results.
  • Works closely with Director of Performance Management to set and monitor performance and evaluation of annual goals and budgets.
  • Ensures selected community centers are operating at full capacity and appropriately showcasing program impact as needed for Capital Campaigns and Neighborhood Expansion strategies.
  • Maximize synergy and collaboration between various community centers and programs within the agency
  • Ensure the continued success and growth of operations related to agency programs
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

Master’s Degree Preferred.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 10 years of experience in community development and engagement required.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License with appropriate insurance coverage and ability travel throughout the city.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 60 days post hire

SKILLS:

  • Strong leadership and project management skills and experience
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule, to include some evenings and weekends as needed

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY:

Intermediate skills in Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
