Largely supported by private philanthropic investment, our community-based programs engage and connect individuals to the resources that meet their emerging needs and aspirations. We provide a continuum of services including free tax preparation, family health and education, immigration and citizenship services, financial assistance and programs for youth and seniors.

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides education to adult learners to prepare for the USCIS History and Civics Exam and English Competency Exam. Provides ESL instruction to adult learners preparing for the naturalization interview and exam. Assists the Citizenship Coordinator with coordinating Citizenship classes at all BakerRipley Centers. Provides support, education, and connection to local resources. Serves as an on-site immigration resource to Citizenship class students. The position is approximately 6-12 hours per week. The position requires travel to centers (East Aldine, Gulfton-Sharpstown, and Cleveland-Ripley).

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides quality instruction to adult learners who are interested in applying for citizenship, integrating meaningful classroom activities and valuable experience that facilitate student’s learning goals and workforce skills
  • Supports Immigration and Citizenship Program at community centers by assuring that students are making levels and gains, and by managing students in this program
  • Supports Citizenship Coordinator with data collection of students
  • Supports Immigration and Citizenship Program with outreach activities
  • Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management

Job Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree required – Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Education or related field preferred

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 1 year experience working as an ESL instructor to adults is required AND WHO: 1. Holds a degree in TESOL; and/or 2. Holds TESOL certification from a state licensing agency; and/or 3. Has a minimum of 2 years of experience in TESOL instruction in a classroom setting for a program that utilizes a textbook and a structured curriculum.


SKILLS:

  • Cultural experience or background working with diverse populations
  • Teaching experience working with adult students in a multi-level setting is strongly preferred
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Knowledge of or interest in the Naturalization process and immigration issues
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and successful experience working in teams

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

English and Spanish (written and verbal)
